About Sunlilis
Sunlilis is an ode to the first name given to the Flowaura Flowers.
A few years ago I bought a small stack of blank postcards, where you could draw something in the front and have space in the space to write a letter to a dear one.
I used some of these cards as Christmas gifts when I started to draw my flowers more. These small A6 postcards were the first prints I had at my first market. And although they were small, I could still add plenty of details and colours.
This was for me a beginning to put my flowers in papers and other types of designs. It opened a door to see my flowers everywhere. And before Flowaura had a name, I called all these flowers I drew, Sunlilis. Now I call them Flowauras. However I wanted to keep a piece that holds the old name, a trace of the journey I’ve been through.
I decided to bring Sunlilis in clothing form, the original piece had 5 colours: blue, green, orange, purple and pink. The original idea was to make the garment match one of the colours of the piece. Which is what I did with the first Sunlilis iteration.
I thrifted this oversized, comfy purple sweater and I printed the piece directly onto the front of the garment. For the back I took one of the flowers from the piece and embroidered it. I wanted to keep a slight playful contrast, thus I chose the orange flower to brighten up this dark purple hoodie.
I loved this first iteration of Sunlilis. This is why I wanted to bring back a hoodie with a similar concept for the launch of Flowaura.
After weeks of research for sustainable clothing suppliers, I found B&C, which are known for using sustainable cotton and recyclable materials. They aligned with what Flowaura stands for. Extra attraction for me, they had many colours to choose from! The high quality finishes of the garments were exactly what I was looking for.
For the second iteration of Sunlilis, I wanted to create more harmony and I felt that picking the green flower to be embroidered in the back made the most sense. The front will stay the same. Although I had sketches of how big the flower in the back had to be, my printing suppliers took liberties and decided to embroider the flower in a large size. And since every piece I want to design for the Blooming Collection is unique, I decided to keep the hoodie for the launch. It definitely is one of a kind now!
